If you have never heard of a game which is commonly known as werewolf or mafia, the rules are simple. There are a number of people in a group with some of them being werewolves/mafia and those people will kill a civilian each night, with the only way which civilians can use to save themselves being to vote and execute someone each day. However what you may not know is the story this game is based on.
There was this settlement known as Civiltown, and one day a man known as William came to this place, and decided to live there. As he step foot in the almost empty village, he was immediately greeted by Leo, who claimed himself to be the current leader of the handful of people also living in the area.
"As you can see, the numbers are getting slim lately, Mister William," Leo stated, "it's all because of the mafia. Civiltown was quite a popular town, until people started to get killed and move away those bastards showed up, now this land can barely be called a hamlet. That is why we started a system where we will execute one person each day, just so that we can finally be rid of the mafia. We were supposed to start today, but we will delay it since it is the arrival of a new residence after all. Your house would be right over there, right next to Dick's. I shall be going now, but take an advice from me: stay out of trouble, and stay inside. You can't trust anyone here."
As William unloaded the baggage from cart, another man came up to him. "Hi, you must be the new resident! Your name is William, right? My name is Mason, nice to meet you!" William merely nodded to his name and shook Mason's hand, yet he did not say anything more than a 'thank you'. Mason frowned, and started to talk with him. "Aw, come on. What are you so intense about? It's what Leo's been telling you isn't it? Well, it's true. But don't fret over it, what's the point of worrying anyway? Besides, I'm sure that the village nurse and detective are working their best to ensure our safety."
"Really? Who are they?" William asked.
Mason scratched his head for a minute. Finally he answered, "I'm not quite sure. I only heard that they're still here despite most of the population moving out out of fear. In fact pretty much most of us aren't very close to each other up to yesterday. Anyhow the sun is setting, I shall be going now."
As the moon rose into the sky, everyone in the settlement went to sleep. However not all of them woke up. The remaining eight residents gathered in the town hall which is way to large for the current population of eight.
"It seems last night, Dick has died. It may seem like an accident, as if he got a little too drunk and lost his footing outside the bar but it is undoubtedly the work of the mafia." Leo announced. "Therefore as we have agreed on yesterday, we now need to decide who is guilty of such a horrible act. Discussion may now begin."
"Who lives next to him?" Christina asked.
"That would be Vincent and William, who only moved in yesterday." Leo answered on the stand.
"It's definitely that new guy over there!" Vincent pointed at his suspect immediately. "I knew he was up to no good."
"How can you say that about your neighbour!" Mason cut in before William could give a rebuttal. "You don't have any proof! If anything you are much more suspicious. Is that a way to treat a newcomer? He just didn't know any better."
"What are you so angry about? I'm just stating that it seems suspicious that he specifically chose to be beside the victim's. That's all." Vincent replied angrily.
"Actually, that house was assigned to him because it was the cleanest and the most stable one out the houses that are left since that day when almost everyone went missing." Leo answered for him. "Also Dick was the only one which agreed that it is fine for William to live near him."
"Vincent, I don't mean any offense, but it does seem mildly suspicious for you to jump to William being the killer." Earl suddenly said.
Vincent turned to argue with Earl. However before the shouts turned into a fight, Leo banged the gavel on the stand. "Since none of us really have actual evidence, let's all take a vote." He said, taking out the ballot box. After everyone submitted their vote, Leo announced that Vincent is the culprit.
"No! I'm innocent I swear!" Vincent cried, but it was useless. He was soon executed according to the rules.
As the trial ended, everyone went back to their houses and went on with their business. No one talked to anyone else, for they fear that the dangers are not over yet. And indeed that night, another soul was taken by the hands of the mafia.
As the people gathered in the town hall for the second time, Leo announced the event again. "This morning, another village of our humble settlement is found dead, this time Fiona, in her back garden under her own tree. Discussion may now begin."
"If it's in her back garden, that means that it must be someone who went to her house, right?" Nicole pointed out.
"Well I didn't visit her." Earl insisted.
"Besides, I'm pretty sure no one comes out at night. Everyone is afraid to be killed by the mafia." Mason pointed out.
"Even so, it is impossible to access her back garden, or anyone's back garden without going through the front door." Christina said. "The previous town mayor made sure that all fences are increased to a height of five feet and made of solid wood."
"That is true." Leo confirmed. "We would have no idea of Fiona's condition if it wasn't for the large tree which can barely be seen over the fence top. It does seem impossible for someone to kill her without at least entering her front door or creating a huge racket. Yet the door was perfectly fine, and the lock was intact without any sign of damage. Yet the cut on the tree looks too clean to be an accident."
"I know that other that us girls," Nicole said deep in thought, "the only other person which Fiona is close to is Earl."
"Hey! Don't accuse me like that!" Earl snapped. "Anyone could be the culprit! The fence has a hole in it, anyone can get into her garden easily and murdered her!"
"How did you know that the fence had a hole?" William finally spoke.
Earl suddenly snapped out of his rambling, and started to look shocked. "I... I... Erm... I saw it?" Earl tried an answer as drops of sweat trickled down his head.
"That's quite curious." Leo stated. "When I was notified of Fiona's death, I was unable to enter the garden through the fence. In fact, secondary entrances were the first thing I checked when I got there."
As everyone now turned towards Earl, the clock rang and everyone cast their votes. As expected, Earl was executed according to the vote.
Unfortunately, that was not the last they've heard of the mafia, as dusk came, William heard a knock on the door. He then opened the door, saw a figure in front of him and the next thing he remembered was blacking out.
When William finally came to, he woke up in the infirmary with the townspeople all gathered around him. "Hello William," Leo greeted in a grim manner, "it seems that last night you have been attacked, which means that the threat of the mafia is not completely gone. You were lucky that the town nurse has found you in time. Now I must ask you: do you remember the attacker or who was the one that saved you in time? Any clue would be helpful to our upcoming trial."
"No, I don't remember anything." William admitted. "It was really dark, and I blacked out as soon as I saw the murderer's shadow. I'm sorry."
"No worries, at least we know that you are innocent." Leo comforted him. "Now we must begin the case for the remaining mafia. Is it possible for us to move to the town hall for the trial, William?"
William agreed, and soon discussion began.
"This sure is difficult," Christina exclaimed, "we have absolutely no clues on who attacked William. Well I mean except himself I guess."
"If that's the case, how can we reach a verdict? We can't risk another person being attacked tonight. William was lucky to be found in time last night by the town nurse, but all the first aid supplies and medicine must has been used up for healing William last night, as I was unable to find any of it when I checked the infirmary this morning, which was part of my daily checking routine."

"How about we all just vote who we find most suspicious then?" Christina suggested. Everyone agreed with Christina's suggestion, who then realised that it might have been a mistake for her to have said so. After the votes were counted, Leo soon announced the result: Christina.
"Are you serious!" Christina bellowed at the four other residents. Sadly, as the rules are rules, Christina was executed.
However unfortunately for the remaining residents, Christina is not the mafia, as another life was taken the next night.
"Last night, as we all know, Nicole has been killed by the hands of the mafia. William, you know what this means, don't you?"
"What, that I'm part of the mafia?" Mason shouted.
"No offense, but at the rate of which you shouted that sentence, I'm sure that you would reach the same conclusion as I have if you were me." Leo rebutted.
"Well, as I am me now, I'd like to make my argument that it was you!" Mason
Leo sighed, "What are your thoughts on this, William?"
"Oh, has discussion began?" William finally asked.
"I don't find it necessary to say this, but yes, discussion has started." Leo pressed the button on the clock.
"Listen William, what does the mafia want? That's right, they want all of us dead. All of us who are not part of their league are as good as dead in their eyes, and that's exactly what they want. Now what has Leo done for us? Yes, he may have been running the village since the last mayor left, which in fact is a point I will be returning to in a minute, and checking up on everyone, yet again another point I'm going back to in two, but he has also proposed the vote for execution system, and what good did it do to us? Kill three folks and people are still dying! If anything, it's speeding up the mafia's mission! Back to my other points, don't you think it's odd that he is leading the village. As far as I know, he had no place in the office, and if you think about it, being in such a position makes a lot of sense for a mafia member. Not only so, when he says that there isn't any evidence, can we really just take his word for it?"
"I'd like to cut in right there, Mr.Mason. Although it is true that I am not in the office before then, I can assure you that I was given permission personally by the Mayor before he left."
"Don't listen to him, William. Everything he's saying are lies. You know it! Who do you trust? Him or me?"
"Anyhow, with you being the only other person, you'll need to make the call here. It's all on you, William. No pressure."
Just then, the clock rang one last time, and after deep thought, William gave his answer: Leo. After a long pause, Leo finally replied: "As a man I always keep my word. Alright, I'll be putting you in charge of the village, or what's left of it. I hope you know what you're doing."
That afternoon, William was taking a walk, and as he reached his house, he saw Mason sitting beside the table in front of his house. "Hi, William." He greeted.
"Hi, Mason." William greeted back. "Having coffee?"
"Yep. How are you doing?"
"Fine. Well, in fact, great! I mean, now the mafia's gone, we can finally live a peaceful life! Ain't that just great?"
"Yes, indeed." Mason agreed, as he took out a dagger from his pocket, and smiled.
"Say, we never really introduced ourselves," William suddenly spoke, "but it's not too late now, right? So what do you do? You know, as a job, I guess."
"Well, as a carpenter. But not as much recently, because... you know. What about you?"
"Not much either. I just do odd jobs and stuff in my old village, Lambville."
"Actually, I do have a question, why did you move here? I heard that it was also quite peaceful there."
"Well, it's a long story, say, I have a question. You said that the vote for execution system was firstly suggested by Leo, right?"
"Yes, ironic that it got him in the end, right? To be found and killed by his own system, he deserved it though."
"Not exactly." William muttered under his breath.
"What was that?" Mason sprang up at him, as he gripped his knife. However instead of even reacting to him, William gave a short chuckle.
"You want to know what happened in my old village? Same thing that happened here. People died."
"By the mafia too?" Mason asked, trying to lower his volume, but still not losing his grip on his weapon.
"Now that I've been here and seen... you know, it's not completely impossible. Have you heard the myth of the werewolf?"
"Not exactly, what about it?"
"Well, a werewolf tends to look and act exactly like a human, that is, until the sun sets. Then they turn into absolute monsters. In fact it's believed that larger packs tend to kill humans every night for food."
"Are you saying that they were the ones that murdered in your village?"
Strangely, William gave another laugh at Mason's question. Starting to feel a lot more terrified, Mason tightened his grip and raised his knife slowly towards his opponent. It was then he realised the sun set. It was then he noticed something else is odd with William. He seemed to have a larger physique, his fingers started to stretch longer than normal, he seemed to have turned a darker tone, and his laugh changed into a howl. Before he could even process what is going on, he was already eaten alive.
"Well, as I am me now, I'd like to make my argument that it was you!" Mason
Leo sighed, "What are your thoughts on this, William?"
